What is a “Claim Shark”? • A Claim Shark is an individual or company that charges hefty fees to “assist” or “consult” veterans with filing their VA benefit claims – this practice is illegal! • Claim Sharks are not VA accredited, meaning they aren’t required to adhere to the well-established professional and ethical standards of VA accreditation, so their advice can often be misleading or even fraudulent. • Like a “Loan Shark,” once you’re in, you can’t get out, and may be subject to new and hidden fees whenever you get a new rating, no matter who does the work. For more Information see Camp Lejeune Justice Act slide.
Comrade Spotlight shines a light on one special Comrade a month. Congratulations to VFW Department of Ohio District Four Comrade Christian Gonzalez! #stillserving

VETERANS ORAL HISTORY PROJECT VFW Department of Ohio has entered into a contract with trusted partner, Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI) to contact our members via mail to provide an opportunity for VFW Ohio members to tell their unique stories of service. This initiative is purely voluntary. Members will receive a postcard in the mail with details on how to participate. PCI will collect your oral stories by a telephone interview, and later compile these stories into a publication that will display the rich history of Ohio's veterans from every era, branch and theater. If you are interested in sharing your story of service, please verify your primary contact information by responding to the postcard mailed to you from PCI. Your story is unique and adds to the overall landscape of what service means to the American people, as well as the spirit of the veteran community in Ohio. You can find more information on this project under the programs section and members only, listed as Veterans Oral History Project.

It is with great sorrow that the VFW Department of Ohio announces the passing of Past Department Commander Leon Johnson today. Leon served as Department Commander 2009-2010 He is a member of VFW Post 6772, Spencerville, Ohio and District 2. Leon served in Vietnam. Leon served in many positions for the VFW from Post, District to State level Commander and many supporting positions when called upon. Leon was always ready to serve the organization that he loved in any capacity, and thought only of what he could still contribute even when he knew there was little time left. Our hearts and sympathies’ go out to his wife Robin, his family and the many friends he has across the State of Ohio and the USA.
